1CY
Large Gulls of Goa, mid-November
The 1st Calendar Year birds showed a wide range of
progression of moult into 2nd generation feathers. Quite a few had
moulted part or most of the wing coverts. It seemed as if a
lot of these birds were relatively smaller and small-billed, and most
had what Malling and Olsen describe as the feather patterns typical of barabensis.
Others were much less advanced in moult; these seemed on average to be a
little larger and heavier billed, but there was a lot of variation.

1st CY #1 |
In juvenile plumage apart from some 2nd
generation mantle feathers. Possibly a heuglini or just a late
heavy-billed barabensis? |
1st CY #2 |
Presumed barabensis, given flank
streaking, relatively small bill and the anchor pattern on 2nd
generation feathers. |
1st CY #3 |
Heavier-billed bird, still with some juvenile
scapulars but has dropped median coverts. |
1st CY #4 |
Another heavier-billed bird, moulted mantle
and some upper scapulars only. |
1st CY #5 |
Extensively pale-barred greater coverts and
more heavily marked rump than other birds. Only bird in flock (c
500 1CY) showing this covert pattern. |
