American Herring Gull, Larus smithsonianus

2nd Calendar Year, February

Washington D.C., USA

Lots of interesting features on this gull: a small and not very contrasting inner primary window, the uppertail coverts are much less densely barred than normal (very clear and widely separated dark bars), and the new upperparts feathers (plus one greater covert on left wing) are grey, though distinctly darker than adult-type feathers.
